2008 Den Dues ($15/quarter)

Thank you all for your input and time in helping plan our calendars for 2008.  We are looking forward to an exciting year and a lot of activities that will increase the Scouts in the areas of citizenship training, character development and fitness.  In adjusting our calendars we have placed most of the activities on Mondays to keep with the current schedule.  We also took a close look at the costs needed to cover these activities, facility rental and supplies to determine the minimum offset needed by each Scout.  Starting January 1, 2008, the quarterly den dues will be $15.00.

These fees will be tracked by each Scout and the amount remaining at the end of September will be applied towards pack level dues.  These fees along with fundraising monies will pay for the following activities doing the next six months:

Aliso Canyon Conservation Project (Aliso Canyon)

Beach Volleyball (Alicia Park)

Cub Socks Baseball (Oso Viejo Community Park)

Egg Bowling (Saddleback Lanes)

Fool's "Flag" Football (Oso Viejo Community Park)

Good Turn Flag Placement (Lake Forest Memorial)

Howling Evening Hike (Back to Natives)

Howling Wolves Camping (Oso Lake)

Red Rock Canyon Hike (Whiting Ranch)

Robber's Cave Expedition (Aliso Canyon)

Biking into Summer (Sycamore Park)

Our next planning meeting for Summer 2008 will be in late April.  Thank you all for helping make this an exciting and educational program for the Scouts.

NORAD Tracks Santa with Google Earth - Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all of our friends and families;

More than presents our family enjoys the excitement that Santa Claus is coming and become restless as Christmas Eve approaches and Santa takes off from the North Pole.  As we all are busy taking off to the Mall, Friends and Family outings we just want to take a minute to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season.

I just went to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to check on the update of Santa’s arrival here in North America and noticed that this year Google Earth will be assisting in the process of tracking and protecting Santa as he enters the North America Airspace.  If you track Santa as close as we do in our house be sure to download Google Earth before Monday (http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html).  Of course we still find it easier and fun as we go to bed to call NORAD Santa Tracking and Command Center at (719) 556-5211 or (877) Hi-NORAD and talk to the volunteers that help make this project possible.

For over 50 years NORAD has been “guarding what you value most” - http://www.norad.mil/50/index.html.  Canadian NORAD fighter pilots, flying the CF-18, take off out of Newfoundland to intercept and welcome Santa to North America. Then at numerous locations in Canada other CF-18 fighter pilots escort Santa. While in the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or F-16 get the thrill of flying with Santa.  To find out more and to get ready to track Santa, visit http://www.noradsanta.org/en/how.htm.

Merry Christmas from our family to your family,

Alan & Angie, Rigel and Rhea

2008 Den Dues

As every parent knows in our group I am very huge on planning.  A well planned program is the foundation to the success of Cub Scouting.  One of these items is securing a fixed meeting location in 2008 at the Norman Center (starting in February) to help ensure the Scouts have a place to work on achievements in the handbook and prepare themselves to advance through the program.  The facility does come at a cost about $3/month for each Scout.

Currently, Cub Scouts in our Den are paying $1/week at the Pack Level ($52/year) to cover the cost of their handbook, hat, neckerchief and slide (~$30.00), an average of about 5 beltloops/pins a year (~$10.00), rental of pack meeting facility, group camping reservations and other administrative/supplies needed for the pack.  The Pack Committee continues to make efforts to keep the cost of the Pack program to a minimal and is currently working with the District to maintain the current cost of the pack meeting facility.  The additional $23/yr that is paid covers the annual Boy Scouts registration, boys’ life subscription (required as a Quality Unit for every Scout to have his own copy) and insurance.

Since, at the Den Level, we are a smaller group than the pack our cost to offset facility rental is slightly higher and we would still need to require the hosting family for each month to cover the cost for drinks and snacks for the kids.  I am also a big fan of reserve funds to help cover surprise ice cream party, water balloons in the summer, materials to build kites and other fun things for the Scouts to learn.

As we begin to plan for 2008 and determine the amount of funding we will have for such activities I would like to ask the Akelas to reply with an amount they would be willing to pay in Den Dues each quarter (every three months) to help ensure our Den has a solid program throughout the year.  The amount is additional to specific activity fees (ie, bowling shoe rentals, movie & facility admissions, etc.).

As mentioned the Norman Center is $10/quarter and maybe we double that amount as an estimate of other expenses.  In any case the amounts remaining in the Den (allocated by Scout) at the end of next year would be applied towards their Pack Level Dues.

Please reply with an amount your family would be comfortable to pay each quarter in Den Dues.  Thank you all for helping us plan for a successful program in 2008.

Pack Meeting Recap

Thank you to all the parents that came to the pack meeting last night. It was exciting to have the Mayor of Mission Viejo and the Orange County Register Reporter (please keep an eye out for articles) at our very own Pack Meeting.

As the Scouts gathered in for the meeting the Mayor invited Scouts to fill out Holiday Cards to the Troops spending time away from their families during this time of year. Cubmaster Stroud & Mayor Kelley offered the opportunity to all the Scouts and Siblings to pick up a card and spend as few minutes as we got things organized for the evening.

The flag ceremony was lead by the Tiger Cubs

We reviewed the upcoming Casper’s Campout, Pinewood Derby Event, Snow Play (Big Bear) and spent some time surfing around the various links and resources available to the Akelas of Pack 766 on our new website (www.pack766.org). Mrs. Dalphy invited parents to volunteer their time at the Pack Level to help with Scout-O-Rama and to train to become our next Cubmaster and Committee Chair. Our Pack does not exist without the active participation from the parents. I do want to thank those within our Den that have volunteered to help with our Planning and Steering committee next week as this will help in guiding our Den and I encourage every parent, that has time, to volunteer at the Pack.

Following the announcements, Mrs. Baker helped with a skit that got Cubmaster Stroud nicely dressed up for an overview of Celebrations around the World as we brought the Scouts on stage for their monthly awards.

Congratulations to the following Scouts of Den 6:

Master Brian (Leave No Trace Award*, Outdoor Activity Award, Ice Skating, Swimming and Tennis Beltloops)

Master Mason (Outdoor Activity Award)

Master Nathan (Math, Marbles, Fishing, Bicycling, Soccer Beltloops, Sports Letter, Bicycling, Fishing and Soccer Pins)

Master William (Heritages Beltloop, Sports Letter & Golf Pin)

Note: The cut-off for next month awards and achievements for the January 15 meeting is the den meeting on January 7 (please bring your summary sheets or send me an email) where we will be building the “Official” Derby Car of Den 6 and helping Scouts use coping saws and other tools to create their very own entry. Mrs. Prosser has offered to host the activity at her house as we are still waiting for the construction to be completed on our future home at the Norman Center (more information to follow). * The Leave No Trace Award Overview was removed from the schedule prior to the final printing and we will look at including it at our next Pack Meeting.

To start our program we invited a couple Scouts to quickly come on stage to perform a one minute skit on Helpfulness (Cub Scouting Values: Resourcefulness, Citizenship & Responsibility). We had technically difficulties with showing the Pack the video from the Scouts Citizenship training activity at City Council and moved into inviting the Scouts & Akelas on stage to present them with a Citizenship Certificate on behalf of Pack 766 and the City of Mission Viejo. During this time Mayor Kelley also presented each Scout a City of Mission Viejo Lapel Pin as a thank you for their performance at City Council. It was also with great pleasure that we presented the Mayor with a gift from Saddleback District Commissioner, Bill Grennell as a token for her time and commitment in “lighting” the way for Cub Scouts over her many years of service, ... also a coffee mug to help her stay awake as she continues in her service in the years to come. I do want to apologize as I rushed through the presentation to Den 6 as we were already past our hour of time following the announcements and awards.

On that note, I do want to mention that Congressmen Miller also sent the Cub Scouts of Den 6 a US Flag flown over the US Capital in Washington DC as a thank you for performing the Citizenship Activity at Council and for their commitment to the Cub Scout Promise to do their duty to God and Country. I elected to hold off on the presentation to the den of the US Flag as, in my opinion, such an event should not be rushed and we can schedule it in for next month.

I want to express a special thank you to the families that stayed beyond our normal time to listen to the Mayor’s overview on the value of character development. Her example of guardrails was wonderful in visualizing the strength of character in keeping us focused when life steers us in different directions. She was wonderful at getting the Scouts involved and got them interacting with the presentation. Our pack would like the thank Mayor Kelley for staying with us through and after the meeting to talk to the Scouts about character development and the Community of Character Program in Mission Viejo.

Cubmaster Stroud closed the evening with holiday wishes to the families and personally thanking the Mayor for her time and commitment to the Boy Scouts of America.

Upcoming Events:

12/28 @ 7:00PM – 2008 Den Steering & Planning Meeting, Foothill Ranch

1/7 @ 6:30PM – Den Meeting @ Prosser’s Residence

1/12 @ 9:00AM – Snow Play, Big Bear (FORMS REQUIRED – Class 1 Medical and Waiver) http://pack766den6.blogspot.com/ - Forms Section

Our Cub Scouts Make the Orange County Register

Pack Meeting - TONIGHT!

Special Guest Announcement

It is with great pleasure that I invite all the Cub Scouts to the Pack Meeting tonight as we will be visited by Mission Viejo’s newly elected Mayor, Trish Kelley who elected following the meeting where our Cub Scouts lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Kelley has served the Community of Mission Viejo for 30 years and was honored to continue that service be accepting our invitation to our Pack Meeting as she has for various Eagle Courts of Honor.

Her commitment to Scouting is evident in her own family from herself being a former Girl Scout Leader to helping her boys through both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Within the Community she initiated the Community of Character Program which carried many of the same core values as Cub Scouting.

Additionally, our Den will be presented with the Flag of United States by Congressman Gary Miller’s Office for the commitment to do their best in their duty to God and Country. The flag being presented was flown over the United States Capitol in acknowledgement to the promise made by our Cub Scouts.

Tonight we will be collecting the Book Reports for the 20th Annual “Say Yes to Reading Program”. Remember any paper will do and there is a form available on our Blog’ http://pack766den6.blogspot.com/. Passing our Derby Cars, collecting permission forms for Snow Play and collecting $5 for Casper Camping to reserve your spot (remember first come, first serve!)

I know I am missing something...

Oh have your Scouts ready for some exciting fun!

Mistletoe Fundraiser - Congratulations!

After two weekends of selling mistletoe the Scouts did a wonderful job! These funds will help cover the cost of camping and other great den activities in 2008.

As we close out this fundraiser and finish off the remaining mistletoe tonight in Lake Forest I wanted to take the time before I get on the bus to let the Scouts know what a great job they did at this fundraiser. The greatest reward was watching the Scouts develop character and strength in various skills through the activity.

Personally, I am looking forward to camping next month as we get 2008 started for our Scouts. Also I want to thank the Akelas for making sure this event had 100% Scout Participation.

Pack 766 Website Officially Launches

Last weekend the Leaders & Committee Members voted to officially launch the Website of Pack 766 (www.pack766.org) to help Akelas and Scouts stay informed and access valuable resources to help them in enhancing the Scouting Experience for their boys.  This new site has been a few months in the making and is made possible through the dedication and hard work of Mr. Puchalski, Den Leader of the Tiger Scouts.

Last month I forwarded a link to the “test/beta” site that was being hosted on Mr. Puchalski Family Website along with a password to some restricted areas.  This password is still the same and allows you greater access to Calendars and Photos.

We hope you enjoy this added feature to our family of resources and keep an eye on the site as it changes almost everyday.  You can also link to our Blog’ from the site as well to find out detailed information relating to our Den.

Again special thanks to Mr. Puchalski.

Home Depot - 3:30P

Today will be another fun Scout Outing. Special thanks to Janice for helping to schedule this event.

Location:

Home Depot

27952 Hillcrest, Mission Viejo, CA 92692

Time:

3:30 – 5:00P

I want to apologize now as I will be rushing from the airport this afternoon and will most likely be there on time; however, the plane is scheduled to land around 2:30 and has not been late so far this year on my travels to Sacramento. If I am late, please do not hesitate to begin the tour. Again I do not expect to be late but things can happen.

If you have any questions, email me.

Dear Families of Pack 766,

Last year we had such a good time with Snow Play for the boys, we decided to do it again! For folks new to the pack this year, Snow Play is a ‘tubing’ hill in Big Bear where pretty much anyone can grab a tube and slide down the hill, no skill required! There is also a ‘magic carpet’ so you don’t have to walk up the hill to slide again!. Doesn’t get better than that!

So the details are as follows:

1. Jan 12th in Big Bear. Same hill as last year. www.bigbearsnowplay.com

a. There are 2 hills for Snow Play and we are at the hill right next door to the Motel 6

2. Fees

a. Cubs are free, paid for by pack money earned from the sale of popcorn

b. Siblings and parents are at the negotiated reduced rate of $18 per person

i. Children 2 through 6 can ride free but they must be accompanied with a paid adult the entire time they are on the hill

3. If you want to go please be prepared to pay and fill out a waiver form at the Pack Meeting next Tuesday, December 18th

a. Pay

i. Please make checks payable out to Pack 766 and I will get the full amount to Snow Play in advance

ii. This will allow us to get the tickets separately and avoid the long lines, and get in an hour early when there are very few other people!

b. Waiver

i. Form is attached. You must complete the waiver form including parent who will be on the hill as well as each child’s name

ii. You do not need a separate form for each child, but rather clearly list all the children’s names who will be attending on the same form

4. Time of event.

a. I was able to negotiate they open up the hill for us at 9AM versus 10AM. Any sponsored prepaid group will be allowed on at 9AM, otherwise 10AM

5. Lodging and meals

a. There are a couple of hotels in the area, the closest being the Motel 6. We stayed there last time. It is a basic Motel 6. Great breakfast down the street

b. As we did last year this is a “bring your own lunch” event. If you prefer there is a couple of sandwich shops and pizza place that deliver near by

6. Misc

a. Bring an extra set of clothes

b. No helmets allowed

c. We will bring up an EZ-UP so you can find us

d. Please bring a lawn chair as seating was limited

Let’s have some have fun!

If you have any questions please contact me at my email address of Larry_Dalphy@adaptec.com. My office number is 408-957-1139 but please note I spend a fair amount of time in the lab so not at my desk.

Regards, Larry
