December Calendar (Please Reply)

Pack 766 Den 6 Akelas & Scouts -
Another month gone! It is amazing how fast the days get ahead of us. I wanted to thank everyone for yet another awesome month. Congratulations to those that went on another High Adventure Hike this weekend (they keep getting better and more challenging - thanks to Don for helping put these together).

Well it is time to get ready for our January Campout at Oso Lake. This year we will once again be doing a lot of activities to work towards Bear Rank, including Achievement 19... What is this achievement you might ask? It is Shavings and Chips where our Scouts will complete the requirements in safety and respect of a pocket knife. Also at Oso Lake they now have tomahawk throwing as part of the activities.

At the Den Meeting many of you picked up the paper talking about what we do to get ready and stating the tentative weekend being the same as last year, Martin Luther King Holiday (Saturday, January 17 and January 18). Part of the stuff we do is sell Mistletoe to raise funds for the Den. These funds help eliminate the need for Den Dues and almost makes us through the year with all the activities we do as a Den.

Please Reply (as soon as possible) if you are available on Saturday, December 6th or Sunday, December 7th from 2:00 to 4:30P and again on either Saturday, December 13th or Sunday, December 14th from 2:00 to 4:30P.

The Academics and Sports program focuses on learning and skill development, not winning. All Scouts should knowingly use one of the twelve core values of Cub Scouts while undertaking Scouting Activities. Values in Action! Pack Meeting Reminder (New Time - RSVP Required)

Good Morning Pack 766 Den 6 -

I wanted to send a quick email to help ensure everyone is ready for: Tuesday, November 18, 2008.

What is Happening: Pack Meeting

What is on the Agenda:

1) Uniform Inspection

2) Toy Drive

3) Popcorn Surprise, and

4) Flag Ceremony

Where is this Located:

Castille Elementary School

24042 Via La Coruna

Mission Viejo, California

What time is this Event: 6:15 PM PST

Why do I need to Attend:
1) Uniform Inspection - Master Nelson will be in charge of awarding the Scouts for properly assembled uniform. This means if you have earned the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award and/or Devices they are properly attached. If you have a service star it is properly attached with the correct backing to the uniform. The World Crest is not obstructed from clear view and the Religious Knot and/or Recruiter Strip is attached to the uniform. (I will have beads to attach to everyone's uniform for the inspection. These beads will be based on attended meetings and progress towards rank.

2) Toy Drive - This month our Theme is Seeds of Kindness. We ask that every Scout bring a new unwrapped toy for giving. If you are already doing such through your Church or other organization, please do not feel obligated to do additional service. These toys will be donated to the Children's Hospital.

3) Popcorn Surprise - Saddleback District exceeded their goal in Popcorn Sales by nearly 25%. Overall the Council is just under goal; however, this year was a hit and miss season for sales with some units nearly selling 10x their prior year and others doing slightly less then past sells. Now the question comes; did we exceed our goal? You will have to attend to find out what is in store. :)

4) Flag Ceremony - This month we are in charge of running the Flag Ceremony. We will have two (2) Scouts on stage with Master Nelson and four (4) carrying and guarding the flag. We ask that everyone be in attendance. At the Den Meeting we called numbers for who was in charge of each activity. Please plan to arrive no later then 6:15PM PST so we can confirm presence and practice prior to the meeting.

5) Questions? - Please contact Don or I if you have any questions regarding this event.

Note: We are attempting to move a little more away from emails and to personal phone calls. Please reply to Don (949) 701-6994 with a suitable phone number that you can be reached along with the preferred time and to R.S.V.P. for the Pack Meeting. He may also be in contact with everyone this weekend to confirm attendance.

See everyone on Tuesday.

RE: Veterans Day

Becky,

Here is the email on the Veterans Day activity mentioned in my prior email - again welcome to the Pack. I have also copied others as I did not see their name on the distribution list for this event and wanted to make sure they were aware of the activity.

For those in copy, please accept my apology if you have already replied directly to Kaci Slymen.

November 7, 2008

Dear Cubs and Families,

Thank you so much for the overwhelming response to our call for volunteers for this year’s Veterans Day celebration. For all volunteers, please meet in the Lavender Room, to the left inside the main doors at the Community Center, by 1:45 p.m. in full uniform.

If you have not yet volunteered, we would love to see you there! Please see below for the information to RSVP if you can make it.

We encourage all of you to talk with veterans in your family and neighborhood and visit the flag memorial set up outside the library.

Veterans Day - According to Wikipedia, Veterans Day honors the 24.9 million military veterans of the United States. A veteran is a person who has or is working in the armed forces, and this is not limited to those who served in combat or who are retired. However, Veterans Day is commonly meant to honor all who have served the United States in war.

Veterans Day history - is celebrated on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I; major hostilities were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Memorial Day – observed on the last Monday of May, the day honors American service members who have died in war.

Patriotism – love and/or devotion to one’s country.

Reverence – to regard someone with respect, admiration, deference.

For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/

Sincerely,

Luke and Kaci (Matthew’s parents)

Email sent October 29, 2008:

Dear parents of Pack 766 cubs,

We would like to invite you and your Cub Scouts to attend our first big, all-pack community service event of this school year. We will be attending the Veteran’s Day ceremony conducted by the city of Mission Viejo, Tuesday November 11, 1:45 p.m., at the Norman P. Murray Community Center behind Newhart Middle School, off La Paz and Veterans Way.

The one-hour ceremony will include several veterans groups, a flag ceremony, speeches, singing, a plaque unveiling, rifle salute, and refreshments. All Cubs are to attend in full uniform and with a responsible adult.

In conjunction with a Boy Scout troop, our Cubs will either hand out programs or refreshments to the many expected guests. More importantly, we will be walking around and talking with the veterans in attendance, giving them a chance to interact with our young kids.

This is a chance for Pack 766 to earn a greater presence in our community while at the same time allowing the boys to improve their communication skills, citizenship, patriotism, and good manners. To our knowledge, we are the only Cub Scout group invited to assist at this event!

If you and your son can attend, please email your RSVP to us as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you for this truly remarkable opportunity.

Sincerely,

Luke and Kaci Slymen (your new Community Service chairs)

Rules and Information

1. We will meet in the Lavender Room, just to the left inside the main door, at 1:45 sharp. Please plan to be available until 3:30 p.m.

2. This event is open to the public and will be crowded. To ensure the safety of each child, we are asking that a responsible adult attend with each Cub Scout. This is NOT a drop-off event. This will also ensure that Pack 766 is represented in a respectful, orderly manner.

3. All Cubs should be in full dress uniform.

4. All Cubs should remain in the ceremony area and interact with the veterans. No running around please.

5. Proper etiquette and manners are essential. Please review with your child how to do a handshake, look people in the eyes, speak loudly and clearly, and of course how to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

6. This event will count toward your son’s community service hours and patch.

November Den Meeting

Good Afternoon Scouts -

It is another month with exciting stuff in store for everyone.  As mentioned at our last Pack Meeting this month’s theme is Seeds of Kindness.  To kick off this month various Scouts were involved in the Food Drive this weekend.  I have the bags to distribute to the Den that were mentioned at the Pack Meeting.  I will have these available at our Den Meeting this week.

I also want to take a minute to welcome our newest Cub Scout into the program:

            Master Christopher

Please feel free to make yourself known to him and his family at our next Den Meeting...

...which leads me to the next matter of business...

Den Meeting is Wednesday

Please remember to bring your books to the meeting and any presentations you have for awards, beltloops and so forth.

This month we begin preparing for our Winter Campout at Oso Lake.

Before every meeting Master Nelson has wonderful gathering activities and this month is no different with lessons on knots (I think I was not to tell).

On that note, is everyone ready for Mistletoe?

This month our Denner is Master Brian.

See you all on Wednesday!

- Alan
