Ken,

Is this open for Cub Scouts? If so we are highly interested in having representation from Pack 766.

Thanks,

Robbers Cave Recap

Sorry for the delay in finalizing the recap of the Robber’s Cave Expedition as I have been under the weather since the event.

Congratulations to all the Scouts that participated in the Cub Scouts High Adventure Hike to Robbers Cave (Dripping Cave) over the weekend of February 9th. Having completed the minimum two hour hike to the historic caves in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park sixteen (16) of our Cub Scouts earned the BSA Cub Day Hiker Award. It was also a great pleasure to have a couple adventurous Tiger Scouts complete the trek.

The High Adventure Program provides an opportunity to have Cub Scouts enjoy the great outdoors and the many trails available throughout Southern California. While we were on the hike we had to opportunity to meet two other local Cub Scouts Packs.

Just moments before reaching the cave area, the Scouts came along a person who appeared to been a victim of bandits as he remained motionless on the side of the path. As the Scouts got closer, they too were confronted by the group of robbers claiming the Scouts had entered their hide out. Armed with deadly squirt guns, the robbers demanded the Scouts "Put yer hands up". Having no money or valuables, the Scouts offered knowledge in exchange for their freedom and repeated the Cub Scout Promise.

Finally reaching the cave, the Scouts enjoyed a half - hour of play time while learning about the water erosion that formed the cave similar to that of the Grand Canyon and how Rob Flores used the cave as a hide out after robbing Wells Fargo Stage Coaches between San Diego and Los Angeles in the 19th Century. The kids really enjoyed the chance to explore and we are looking forward to other great hikes. If you have ideas for hikes or other outdoor activities, please let us know as this program is run by volunteers making a difference in the life of our kids.

A special thank you is extended to Mr. Miller, Mr. Dalphy and Mr. Fisher for helping put the event together and coordinating the staged robbery on the trail . Thank you to everyone for coming and if you have any available pictures, please forward them to Mr. Puchalski or your Den Leader.

FW: March 3 Boy Scouts Meeting

Well it is another month and we are still looking for a permanent meeting location.  The new date is April!

I do want to thank Ms. Sartoris who is currently working with Capo Unified and New Hart Middle School to get authorization to use a classroom at her school and Mr. Clem for working with Orange County Public Libraries in attempting to use a library as a meeting place.  We will keep our fingers crossed that one of these locations will work either temporary or permanent.

I know a lot of us have caught this nasty flu virus that is going around (me included) and I will try to get myself up to speed following this weekend.  Everyone ready for Dana Point?

Sorry for trying to cover a few topics in this email as I do not really have the energy to write a separate email; however, I would like to ask for everyone to send me an email tonight on beltloops and/or pins.  Currently I have:

Master Drew earning Skiing & Snowboarding Beltloop
Master Rigel earning Culture Beltloop
Master William earning Citizenship Beltloop

Also I have the following Scouting earning their Wolf Badge at Blue & Gold:

Master Nathan
Master William
Master Rigel
Master Mason

The following just needs to go over Making Choices and cover a little on being safe at home (please cover these in the handbook tonight and reply back):

Master Stojan
Master Sean
Master Brian

If there is anything I missed, please let me know either today or tomorrow as our deadline for submitting for Blue & Gold is tomorrow.

Alan

Hi, Alan

I left you a phone message today - unfortunately the center isn't complete and we won't be able to have your March 3 meeting here - so sorry!  I know you were trying for another location for February and hopefully you can do the same thing in March.

Another alternative is to move the March meeting to the Potocki Conference Center near the soccer fields, but I know parking can be an issue there.  If you would like to try this, please let me know and we can set it up.

Please either respond to this email or give me a call at 470-3035 so I know that you are aware that 3/3 meeting can't be at NPM.

I think we should be ok by April - I sure hope so!

Sorry again for the inconvenience!

FW: Carden Scouts to wear uniform on Friday

To help extend a very special thank you to Mrs. de Avila I would like to also ask the Carden Wolves proudly wear their uniform tomorrow.  The Carden Webelos will be presenting a special gift at the morning assembly and by wearing your uniform you too will help show support for both fellow classmates and Scouts.

I know it is free dress day and those wishing can change out of their “free dress” day outfit at P.E. or when time permits.

Carden Webelos - We are planning to have the Carden Scouts present a Thank You gift to Mrs de Avila during Friday's assembly in appreciation for letting us hold the Pinewood Derby at Carden Academy. As it is Free Dress Day, we would like to have the Scouts in uniform for the presentation, and then they can change into their Free Dress clothes or school uniform for the rest of the day.

Thanks.

Kim Stroud

In an effort to introduce our Scouts to BSA High Adventure we will be hiking to an historical cave area of Orange County.  These caves were the location where Mr. Flores (Rob) hid in after holding up Wells Fargo wagons that traveled from San Diego to Los Angeles in the 19th century.  The cave still bears the markings of Flores' presence: the darkened roof from his campfires and the holes from pegs drilled into the walls to hang his loot.  Warning:  Leave valuables at home!

This hike is a short 4-5 Miles; however Scouts should pack trail snacks and water.  Path is mostly flat and paved to the caves.  Scouts MUST have their Annual Personal Health and Medical Record on file.

Special thanks to Mr. Fatigate for making these reservations and putting this event together.  Our Den will pay for one Scout and one Akela for the event.  Please respond if you will be attending by February 11 so we can purchase tickets.  Scouts will enjoy a hike along tide pools while identifying various sea life.  This is also a Leave No Trace Conservation Project as Scouts will practice Outdoor Ethics and participate in a conservation activity.

Invite a Friend Event – Do you have a friend or know someone interested in joining Cub Scouts?  Please feel free to invite them on this Sc-Outing.  When responding (R.S.V.P.), please let me know if you will be bringing a friend.

Sunday, February 24, 2007 (11:00A - 2:00P) FREE for Scouts & Families

Blue & Gold Celebration, Canyon Crest Clubhouse

22300 Canyon Crest Drive, Mission Viejo (Gate Access – Mention Pack 766)

How can I put this in one email?  This is the annual event where Scouts will come together and celebrate the founding of Scouting.  This year our theme is Chinese New Year.  In order to celebrate this event Scouts are invited to participate in the Man Made Cake Competition.  Anyone have a cardboard box for the oven?  We hope you can make it to this event as we will be celebrating the graduation of Webelos II and honoring our own Scouts that have achieved their Wolf Badge (see Den Meeting above).  Over the last few pack meetings our Den has invited all the Scouts on stage together during the awards and this will be the first meeting where this practice will be extended to the entire pack.  We ask that all Scouts hold their appreciation applause until after all awards have been presented to all the Scouts in each Den.

Other 1st Quarter 2008 Events

If you have an interest in planning and want to make a difference in the program for your Scout and others in the program, please consider volunteering some time to help coordinate future events.  If you are interested, please talk with me and I would be happy to set some time aside to help you get started as a volunteer within our Den and/or Pack.  This program is 100% Volunteerism!

March 8 (9:30 – 11:30A) – Laser Quest for Knowledge, FREE for Scouts

March 28 – March 30 (All Day) Spring Pack Camp – FULL!  Waiting List reservations are being accepted.  Space is limited to the first 50 Campers.** (Cost: $5/pp to cover the cost of food)  We have overbooked the event; however, Scouts & Families are encourage to still submit their reservations (reply email) so we can make final arraignments as needed.  Ol McDonald had a farm!

Submit your Ideas and Make a Difference!

Please tell us a couple things that you want to do (Outings) and help us make this program the best for our Scouts.  Please email me with ideas on events that can help build our program and aid in developing character in our kids.  We are putting together a Planning Committee and your input will help guide our Den in 2008.

Recap of Pinewood Derby

Pack 766 2008 Pinewood Derby

Congratulations to all the Scouts, siblings and family members for another day full of wonderful memories! Having worked diligently over the last month in preparation for this event the Scouts were very resourceful in designing their cars: a ping pong ball for the Lucky Leprechaun; using a GI Joe item to make a Military Tank Derby Car; and of course the French Fry Mobile had to have a ketchup packet. The Scouts creativity and abilities in designing their own cars were amazing along with their positive and upbeat attitudes throughout the entire day. Through the cooperation of the entire pack we all persevered in making 2008 Pinewood Derby a record breaking performance.

With the threat of rain on Sunday, January 27, the Pack 766’s annual Pinewood Derby was moved to a new location: Carden Academy in Mission Viejo. The covered blacktop area proved to be the perfect venue for the day. Everyone was afforded a trackside seat and the track fit perfectly. Kudos to Larry and Alan for coordinating the procurement of the location, and a very special thank you to Mrs. DeAvila for her kindness and understanding in accommodating us at the last minute.

The Derby was a frenzy of excitement as the Scouts and family members cheered for each other. As our pack has grown, so has our number of racers. We raced an incredible 39 cars in the Scout Divisions and 16 cars in the Open Division for a record number of 55 racers! As always, the creativity of the cars was amazing and the judges had a very difficult job of selecting just one for each of the Best Design, Most Creative and Most Original categories. Any pictures of the event are gladly welcomed for the website. Please e-mail them to Peter Puchalski at peterpuchalski@cox.net.

Top honors in the event went to:

Best Design – Ryan Schmitz

Most Creative – Brian Clem

Most Original – Brandon Yi

Overall 1st Place – Brian Clem

Overall 1st Place – Matthew Slymen

Overall 1st Place – Zack Stroud

Following the conclusion of the races, we gorged on El Pollo Loco Chicken, an endless bounty of fruit and at least the kids got their fill of dessert and Julie Miller's Darn Good Chocolate Cake (which at least I want the recipe for). I know all the kids went home with a great sugar high - next year, we need to assign a Dessert Monitor! A special thank you to El Pollo Loco for their generous discount and friendly and speedy customer service.

Thanks to everyone for braving the cold and coming out. It was wonderful that the weather cooperated until everyone was safe and warm at home! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out – unfortunately too numerous to list here. And most of all, thanks to our wonderful Co-Chairs, Mark Robertson and Tom Miller without whom this event wouldn't have happened.
